150 Young Apprentices
As many as 150 schoolchildren could start a Young Apprenticeship in Food and Drink Manufacturing this year.
Following successful trials in 2006, Improve, the food and drink sector skills council, has been given the go-ahead to roll out the course for 14- and 15-year-olds, which delivers the equivalent of four good GCSEs.
Food and drink manufacturing is one of only 12 sectors to share in £33M of government funds and Improve expects the number of available apprenticeship places to treble as a result. Forty-five pupils are already studying the apprenticeship, which supplements their core GCSEs.
