Genetic indicators of beef tenderness are being used to help milk producers add value to their calf production.

Blade Farming South West and Genus ABS, the world's largest supplier of genetic data, have formed the Better Beef scheme to produce high eating-quality beef for the retail and foodservice sectors. Dairy producers will be encouraged to use semen from beef bulls selected by Genus for their tenderness genes.

Data from Genus and the latest DNA technology is used to select beef bulls from traditional native breeds that have high genetic scoring for meat tenderness and loin eye muscle depth. Their semen is then offered to milk producers.

The resulting dairy beef calves are then raised through the Blade Farming rearing and finishing programme on dedicated farms and supplied under forward contract to Somerset-based Southern Counties Fresh Foods, part of the RWM Food Group. The dairy producer is rewarded for the quality and health standard of the calves.

Arla Foods is the first dairy processor to offer the Better Beef semen to its milk partnership producers.
