Fruit growers get a fair deal with smoothie processor
Start-up firm Natural Beverage Company is making its mark on the beverage sector with the launch of the UK's first Fairtrade smoothie range.
Fruit Hit is created using the latest cold aseptic technology, whereby the smoothie is gently pasteurised and then bottled in sterile conditions. The company claims that the process offers retailers and consumers considerable operational benefits, because it means that the product can be stored at ambient temperatures and has a six month shelf-life.
Fruit Hit contains Fairtrade certified bananas from Equador, pineapples from Costa Rica, mangoes from Peru and oranges from Argentina. The fruit is sourced from supplier Agrofair, which guarantees that growers receive the guaranteed price premium that certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International independently determines as a fair reflection of the production costs.
In addition, the growers are organised in a co-operative, which owns 50% of Agrofair's shares. This gives growers a representation on the board of directors, giving them a say in the running of the business and a share in the profits.
The smoothies are available in three 100% fruit variants: Mango & Orange; Pineapple & Passion Fruit; and Blueberry Blend. They contain two of the government recommended five-a-day fruit and veg portions and are packaged in 330ml recyclable bottles.
