One of the latest improvements at the Silver Spring Soft Drinks' site in Folkestone, Kent has been in the company's syrup production processing area. Here, a powder/liquid mixing system, designed by Silverson Machines, has been installed for dispersing and hydrating ingredients.

The Flashblend equipment was developed for the high-speed entraining and instant dispersion of powders into liquids, especially problematic ingredients such as gums and thickeners, flour, starches, and powdered milk.

A homogeneous dispersion can be produced in a single pass, says Silverson's Chris Ryan, with powder incorporation rates of up to 15,000kg/h.

At Silver Spring, ingredients are prepared in concentrated solutions. However, the long mixing times previously required to produce each batch meant that there were problems with keeping up with the rest of production. "We had to begin making up gum solutions hours in advance in order to get a head start since often it took more than an hour to complete a batch," explains syrup room team leader Tom Geldard. "Now we can make a batch twice the size in seven minutes so gum solutions can be prepared on a just-in-time basis.

"The ingredients are only a small percentage of the finished product but the improvements to the process have made a huge amount of difference. The Flashblend gives us the flexibility to react quickly to the needs of production."
