Junk warning

Restricting children's choice of food will not tackle obesity, according to Dr Peter Marsh, director of the Social Issues Research Centre (SIRC) and director of MCM Research. "Demonising the 'junk' that they prefer is rarely a fruitful way of influencing them -- quite the opposite in many cases," he said.

The SIRC is a non-profit organisation founded to conduct research on social and lifestyle issues and funded by MCM, bodies such as the Sugar Bureau and manufacturers such as Cadbury Schweppes, Kellogg and Danone.

Marsh is speaking at a conference -- 'Obesity: who decides what not to eat?' -- in London on March 11 organised by current affairs publication Spiked (www.spiked-online.com).
