Lidl is to create up to 360 new jobs, after receiving planning permission to build a new multi-million pound regional distribution centre.

The discount retailer has been given the go-ahead by North Lanarkshire Council to build the 58,000m2 site at Eurocentral – one of Scotland’s largest industrial estates. It will replace its current Scottish headquarters.

The Eurocentral site will support Lidl’s 92 stores in Scotland, as well as create more local job opportunities and allow for further expansion and investment, the supermarket claimed.

Construction of the distribution centre is to start within six months. Lidl planned to relocate its 400-strong workforce in Livingstone to the new site.

400-strong workforce

Lidl Scotland md Ross Millar said the company had been working closely with North Lanarkshire Council since it acquired the site for the new distribution centre in 2016.

“Our new regional distribution centre not only signifies an investment in our own infrastructure and workforce, but also highlights our wider ambitions within Scotland as Lidl UK continues to experience incredible growth,” he said.

“Our expansion could not be possible without being able to recruit the right people. I am equally proud that we were the first supermarket to pay the living wage rate, as set by the Living Wage Foundation.”

The news follows the opening of Lidl’s distribution centre in Southampton in November of last year, which created more than 400 permanent jobs.

Planned to open new warehouses

The firm planned to open new warehouses in Wednesbury, Exeter, Bolton and Doncaster, which could create an additional 2,000 jobs in total.

Established in the UK in 1994, Lidl has 650 stores and 10 distribution centres in England, Scotland and Wales. It has more than 20,000 employees.
