Beware of fishy claims about the seafood industry

By Mark Escolme, md,Young's and Findus UK, 04-Jun-2010

I was disconcerted to read Mark Rigby's opinion piece in Food Manufacture (April issue, p15) in which he reiterated the oft-quoted misconception: "In 50 years there will be no wild fish."

This misleading headline results from a paper by Boris Worm, published in 2006 and widely publicised at the time. In the intervening years Worm's claim has been widely discussed and disputed and has now been withdrawn by its author.

The industry is working hard to ensure a long-term future for seafood, by managing wild caught stocks and supporting sustainable fish farming. Many challenges lie ahead, but the picture is much more positive now than even five years ago.

And with the help of industry initiatives such as our own 'Fish for Life' programme we can all be much more confident that we're at last on the right road to securing seafood for future generations.

It's easy for headlines to persist long after they have been discredited. We all accept that there remain well-founded environmental concerns in fisheries and many challenges ahead. But it's a shame Mr Rigby did not look more deeply into this topic before adding to the reputational challenge of an industry that is working hard to improve global sustainability.
