Online retail giant Amazon is to create more than 300 full-time roles, with the opening of a new warehouse in South Yorkshire later this year.

The new 23,2265m2 depot will be the retailer’s tenth fulfilment centre in the UK and its second in the Doncaster area.

Amazon’s vice president of UK operations John Tagawa said: “Our existing Doncaster team has done an exceptional job of delivering a first rate level of service for our customers and we are delighted to open another site which will further draw upon the strong pool of talent in the area.

“We will continue to create new sites, more jobs and provide a wide range of benefits for our employees.”

‘Ever expanding network’

Amazon customers were looking for low prices on an ever-increasing range of products with fast delivery, he added. “Our ever-expanding network of fulfilment centres and delivery stations across the UK means that every customer in the UK can benefit from delivery of millions of products at a speed and to a location that works best for them.”

The fulfilment centre is due to begin serving customers this autumn and create the new jobs over the next three years.

Doncaster mayor Ros Jones said: “This excellent news emphasises that Doncaster is open for business, and I am delighted that so many jobs have been created. Amazon’s decision to open this centre in Doncaster shows our strength as a logistics hub, and emphasises how much our economy is growing.”

Amazon launched its Prime Now service last month in London and Birmingham. The service offers one-hour delivery on daily essentials such as coffee, batteries and nappies, as well as other popular items like games consoles, toys and sports equipment, through a mobile app.

Fresh food delivery service

Speculation mounted recently that the firm was about to launch a fresh food delivery service in the UK to match similar deliveries in the US. But one consultant warned the business could face difficulties if it tried to replicate its US model in this country.

The retailer runs eight fulfilment centres in UK, which are located in: Doncaster, Dunfermline, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Marston Gate, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay, with a ninth due to open in Dunstable this autumn.

More than 7,000 permanent employees work at these centres.
