Retailers should boost their stocks of staples such as bread and rolls, after research revealed that 48% of consumers plan to use shops nearer to their homes, said the firm.
Nearly a third (32%) of shoppers said they would walk to their local shops more often than using a car, according to the research from grocery think tank IGD's ShopperVista insight into shopper behaviour.
Guy Shepherd, category director, Allied Bakeries, said: “This summer’s events present a huge sales opportunity for retailers — with those located near the Olympic venues were likely to see the greatest surge in footfall. Sales of essential items and party foods such as Kingsmill Soft White rolls likely to see the biggest uplift.
“However, retailers should be mindful that along with this increase in demand will come road closures and congestion – making forward planning vital.”
