Plastic fantastic rises to the fish storage challenge

07-Feb-2013

2 Sisters Food Group's Five Star Fish company recently won a contract to supply Morrisons with cod, haddock and plaice with chilled breaded coating. It needed to produce to bulk with minimal handling and store in limited quantities to preserve the food product colour and highlights, which are key to consumer appeal.

Five Star Fish engaged PPS Equipment to review hygienic, cost-effective and practical solutions to this issue. PPS's crate design requires a 180º rotation to enable the containers to either stack when full or nest inside each other when not in use, saving valuable storage space. These perforated models allow air to circulate so work well for defrosting, freezing and storing perishable goods such as fish and meat, and can also fit on to Euro-standard dollies for easy manoeuvrability.

Five Star Fish operations support manager John Armstrong says: "Following successful trials, the firm hired up to 6,000 reusable food quality polypropylene crates, which are hygienically washed twice per week at PPS Equipment's BRC-accredited factory in Grimsby."
