M&S sourcing boss: what we expect from suppliers

Marks & Spencer (M&S) sets demanding standards for its suppliers but rewards top class achievement, explains the retailer’s head of responsible sourcing and packaging and Plan A Louise Nicholls, in this exclusive video interview.

Filmed after the Food Manufacture Group’s free, one-hour webinar on lean and green production and evaluation systems, Nicholls explained how the retailer’s initiative was benefiting all parties involved.

“We wanted to demonstrate that we would reward business with extra business if they embraced higher ethical, environmental standards,” said Nicholls.

‘Happier workers, who are more productive’

Typically 60% of M&S supplies come from sites with a staff engagement score of more than 65%. “So, they are happier workers, who are more productive. They are driving significant environmental savings and, at the same time, they are really driving through much greater efficiency through their business. And that means they are much more agile and able to deliver new products.

The benefits to customers were great quality, exciting innovation and good availability , said the sourcing boss.

‘Exciting innovation’

M&S benefited by ensuring the it achieved “the right product, at the right price at the right time in the right store”.
