McCain wins approval for £100M factory expansion
The manufacturer has been given the go ahead to expand and upgrade the facility, change the use of its cold stores to new production areas, extend the existing car park and the install a temporary construction access road on land adjacent to the site.
In its planning statement, McCain said: “One of the purposes for the production facility renewal is to introduce new efficient potato handling and storage equipment.
“The proposed extensions at the southern end of the existing plant, facing towards Cayton Low Road, will facilitate the improved equipment, which is why these extensions to the potato receiving part of the plant are being made.”
‘Facilitate the improved equipment’
McCain also plans to install odour reduction technology, landscape the perimeter of the factory and implement renewable technology to reduce the company’s environmental impact. The renewal is expected to take about three years to complete.
Corporate affairs director Bill Bartlett welcomed the planning committee’s decision to approve renewal plans for the Scarborough site.
“Established in Eastfield almost 50 years ago, the McCain Foods Scarborough facility is one of the company’s most successful sites. As the largest private employer in Scarborough – and partner to many suppliers and community organisations in the area – we are dedicated to our operations here.
“This investment will secure the continued, long-term success of our site and we welcome the clear signal sent by the Council today, underpinning its commitment to continued economic growth in the town.”
Significant investment for McCain
Bartlett described the factory renewal as a significant investment for McCain that would allow the company to the meet ongoing demand for its products, address long-term capacity and capability opportunities and deliver the latest technology and broader environmental benefits.
Councillor Derek Bastiman, leader of Scarborough Borough Council, said: “This is an extremely significant development for McCain Foods, which cements the company’s commitment to Scarborough and the Yorkshire coast, and from which our area’s economy stands to benefit massively.
“An investment of such magnitude will have a hugely positive impact on the local job market and supply chain, which in turn will benefit many other businesses and local families. I could not be more delighted and wish the company every success in realising their ambitious plans.”
