Volac sells to consumers
Whey ingredient manufacturer Volac has pledged to expand the number of products under its newly launched consumer brand The Good Whey Company.

The brand was launched last month and represents the firm's first foray into the mainstream consumer market. Products are currently available only online, but Mark Neville, head of lifestyle nutrition at Volac, said: "We will continue to investigate ways to expand the appeal of whey protein to the healthy lifestyle consumer, including developing The Good Whey Company product range and exploring additional retail options.

"We are already exploring the development of new products for The Good Whey Company range, such as snacks and drinks."

So far the company has launched two powdered supplement products: Good Whey Original, which contains 71% protein, and Good Whey Premium Triple Filtered, which contains at least 80% protein. Both are low calorie and fat-free, mix well with juice and water and are available in Velvety Vanilla; True Banana; Summer Strawberry; and Real Chocolate flavours.

"With The Good Whey Company, Volac aims to stimulate demand for high-value nutritional dairy products and expand the appeal and enjoyment of whey protein beyond the sports nutrition category," said Neville. "We are working to increase the quantities of high-quality whey available to ensure there is security of supply for all."

In the past three financial years, Volac has invested more than £20M in expanding processing. This includes £8M in a lactose plant and increased milk replacer capacity and a £2.5M upgrade and expansion of its whey protein isolate site at Felinfach, Wales. It also incorporates a £7M investment in the Milk Link Volac Ingredients joint venture at the Taw Valley Creamery in Devon, England.
