Food firms should take advantage of the UK’s “growing” £1bn ice cream sector by offering new flavours and services to ice cream manufacturers, according to the boss of the Ice Cream Alliance.

The sector’s 80% market share of the ice cream and frozen desserts sector is expected to continue to grow over the next five years, according to Research and Markets.

Zelica Carr, ceo of the Ice Cream Alliance, said: “The ice cream sector is expected to keep growing for at least the next five years according to the latest research, generating a strong demand for a range of goods and services.

“We want to encourage those companies who may not have previously supplied the ice cream sector to promote their products to our members and customers.”

An expected summer heatwave could create demand for a range of services, including ingredients, from the ice cream industry, Carr claimed.

‘Increased business’

“If the forecasts are accurate, the sector is looking at another bumper year in 2014, which in turn will generate increased business for suppliers,” she added.

“Ice cream makers are constantly looking for new flavours and ways to innovate as well as needing a range of services from coffee and associated equipment suppliers, refrigeration, uniforms, cleaning materials and fixtures and fittings for their parlours and shops.”

Carr encouraged businesses that don’t supply to the ice cream sector to promote their products to it at the UK Ice Cream Expo, next year.

The three-day event will be held on February 17-19 at the Yorkshire Event Centre, Harrogate.

Meanwhile, to celebrate its 25th birthday, Magnum released a Marc de Champagne ice cream today.
