Dairy Crest last year selected Nottingham-based consultancy Coriolis to work with on a £3.1M expansion project at the dairy's cold store facility at Dove Valley Park at Foston, just off the A50 between Stoke and Derby.

The project involved the addition of five internal loading bays, two external loading bays, access road, an additional 808m2 trolley yard, overhead trolley system, provision for two further external loading bays. The facility now occupies an area of 2,102m2, sufficient to meet the Dairy Crest's future needs. It took on-site picking volumes to 250M litres a year, part of a phased expansion plan that will eventually see the plant reaching picking volumes of up to 440M litres a year.

Work began last July and work was completed by December 2. The project was finished on time and 10% under budget.

"The cold storage capacity had to be completed within a tight timeframe to meet our Tesco commitments," said Dairy Crest chief executive Mark Allen. "We knew we were in safe hands and we've been delighted with the outcome."

Coriolis project director Mike Roberts said: "We had to deliver the extension within 24 weeks in a live factory environment a real challenge. We completed on time and 10% under budget, giving Dairy Crest the time to fulfil their commitment to major retailers."
