Sandwich manufacturer S&L Catering – which has ceased trading and appointed liquidators on February 2 – is to have its assets sold at auction.

The Huddersfield-based manufacturer of baguettes, wraps, wedges, hot sandwiches and salads, entered an insolvency process, according to Walker Singleton Chartered Surveyors, which is handling the sale. Its assets will now be sold in an auction, ending on February 17.

Walker Singleton Chartered Surveyors was appointed by liquidator RSM Restructuring Advisory to realise the sandwich maker’s assets.

‘Modern production facility’

Walker Singleton’s director Allan Chapman said: “The company operated a modern production facility utilising automated equipment from leading manufacturers, focused on volume sandwich production – as demanded by the blue-chip client base the business serviced.

“As the industry has become aware of the demise of S&L Catering, we have already received several expressions of interest, and we anticipate the auction will generate strong, competing interest.”

Production machinery will be sold, as well as support and ancillary assets, Walker Singleton said. Boardroom and administrative offices’ assets will also be sold, it added.

8M sandwiches a year

Meanwhile, S&L Catering produced over 8M sandwiches a year. Its selection included: ‘Harrogate smoked salmon with Longley Farm cream cheese and dill’, ‘Yorkshire ham and Wensleydale cheese with a cider apple chutney’ and ‘Wensleydale cheese with plum and ginger chutney and rocket leaf’.

Four years ago, S&L Catering won a contract with supermarket Tesco to produce 1,000 sandwiches a day for 50 Tesco stores across Yorkshire.

The manufacturer invested in machinery – now being sold – to handle the increased volume.
