Ragú first to use new barrier pack

Pasta firm Ragu breaks barrier in packaging

Related tags Plastic

The latest addition to the range of one of Britain’s oldest pasta sauces, Ragú, has become the first UK product to go on-shelf in a new type of oxygen barrier pack.

The 400ml RPC Superfos SuperLock, supplied to Ragú maker Symingtons by RPC Containers, has been selected in preference to glass due to its ambient shelf-life of up to 24 months combined with glass-like transparency and the added in-home safety.

SuperLock containers combine an oxygen barrier on all surfaces with a membrane seal to ensure an almost non-existent oxygen transmission rate, claims RPC. The barrier makes use of an in-mould labelling technique. Labels are manufactured using a co-extruded barrier foil and are applied during the injection moulding of the containers. After filling, the containers are sealed with a polypropylene (PP)/ethylene vinyl alcohol/PP membrane seal.

Virtually zero oxygen transmission is ensured, which provides an ambient shelf-life of up to 24 months. Packs can be hot filled and autoclaved during processing.
