A soup contaminated with plastic and undeclared allergens forced a number of food businesses to recall products last week, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Four Sainsbury’s products had to be pulled from shelves after they were found to contain undeclared egg.

Sainsbury recalled all ‘use by’ dates of its Thai Takeaway for two and three varieties of its ‘by Sainsbury’s Prawn Crackers’.

The affected prawn crackers were its 80g packs with a barcode of 1410792 or 7688340 and its 50g pack with a barcode of 7542990.

An allergy to egg is much more common in young children than in adults, Allergy UK said.

Importance of seeing an allergy specialist

Most children with an allergy to egg will outgrow it, emphasising the importance of children with a food allergy being seen by an allergy specialist, it added.

Bravura Foods had to recall its peanut butter flavour hot drink, Peanut Hottie, with a pack size of 260g and a ‘best before’ date of October 16 because it contained undeclared soya.

A packaging error led to a batch being incorrectly filled with the London-based firm’s peanut butter and chocolate flavour instead.

Soya is classed as a major food allergen and must be clearly identified on all food ingredient labels of pre-packed foods for sale within the EU, Allergy UK said.

Plastic contamination

Irish grocer SuperValu was forced to recall four of its own-label soups because they were found to “possibly contain small pieces of plastic”, the FSA said.

The affected products were SuperValu carrot and coriander, chicken and vegetable, tomato and basil and vegetable soups – all with a 400g pack size and a ‘use by’ date of August 5 2015.

SuperValu issued product recall notices apologising for any inconvenience caused.

“As a precautionary measure SuperValu is recalling the above batches of product due to the possible presence of plastic,” it said.

“SuperValu takes all issues of food safety extremely seriously and places a high value on delivering quality products to its customers across the country every day.”

Meanwhile, Kraft recalled some varieties of its American cheese over fears the wrapper would peel off and stick in the cheese.
