The Daniels Group makes chilled foods and was unable to use conventional methods to keep vermin out of the yard at its Grimsby factory for fear of harming water voles living in the dyke running alongside the site.
So it bought two self-cleaning, portable compactors, which are designed to prevent a build-up of waste inside the machine and have automatically closing lids to keep pests out.
Daniels' warehouse manager Bob McLean said: "Now there is no spillage and we are able to drain off any liquid from the compactors into our effluent system, which means we are not paying for its weight (as we used to) when the loads are collected so we have saved a little money through that and through needing fewer collections."
