Stevia sweetener with zero calories in use

Global ingredients manufacturer Tate & Lyle claims to have formulated a fizzy cola drink that delivers a 50% calorie reduction using a natural origin sweetener. The key ingredient used was Tasteva, a stevia-based sweetener developed by Tate & Lyle.

With zero calories in use, Tasteva is said to be able to achieve a 50% sugar reduction in products that still taste "the way consumers want them to", which means without any of the bitter liquorice aftertaste that usually occurs when stevia is used in a product at such a high level.

Reformulating cola drinks to replace the sugar content is particularly challenging as the consumer expects a complex balance of flavours.

Tate & Lyle says it has used its ingredients, formulation, consumer and sensory expertise to design Cola Create. The aim is to help manufacturers meet the challenge of giving consumers what they want: sweeteners with a natural origin, fewer calories and great taste.
