A malt processor which supplies the whisky industry could create new jobs, following the submission of plans for a new factory in Yorkshire.

Muntons plans for a new malt finishing plant – at Tithe Top Farm on Huggate Road, North Dalton – would create six new jobs at the company.

The 1205.97m2 industrial space would contain the plant, as well as offices. Existing buildings at the site will be retained and reused.

The plans come as the demand for peated malt – used to flavour malt whisky and speciality beers – had grown, according to Muntons.

Muntons’ new factory would be open 24 hours a day, due to the process of manufacturing peated malt taking several days to complete.

Finished malt products

Finished malt products would be exported to Asia and the US through ports at Immingham, Hull and Liverpool and Scottish distilleries by road.

Yorkshire Council is currently considering the application.

Guy Newsam, Muntons’ malt production general manager, told FoodManufacture.co.uk the multimillion pound plant will be a significant investment for the company

“The clock started ticking [the start of the planning application] in the middle of November, so we should know whether or not we’ll get permission in mid-February,” said Newsam.

“Were planning permission to be granted, we’d be going ahead with investments and be completed in about 12 to 15 months.”

Brewing and distilling industries

Established in 1921, Muntons produces malt and malted ingredients for brewing and distilling industries worldwide.

It also has a separate division, Muntons Malted Ingredients, which focuses on food industries and non-alcoholic beverages.

Meanwhile, Muntons was investigating the potential that its anaerobic digestion (AD) plant was producing antibiotics that could potentially be developed as a medicine to combat Micrococcus and drug resistant E.coli.

Muntons environment manager Ryland Cairns recognised that there could be potential to find some good bacteria due to their “unique feedstock within their award-winning AD plant”.
