Beer lorry overturns in high winds
The A1(M) southbound carriage was closed today (September 21), near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, after a lorry carrying beer, wine and spirits overturned in high winds.
The accident happened at about 0530 and the carriage later reopened, following the recovery of the vehicle. Strong winds caused numerous other accidents involving cars and trucks across the UK.
A woman died in London after being hit by a falling tree, felled by the high winds.
Gusts of up to 70mph
Gusts of up to 70mph have battered much of the country in widespread disruption predicted by the Met Office.
The winds disrupted flights at Heathrow airport, disrupted ferry sailings and delayed trains.
The Environment Agency has issued two flood warnings and several flood alerts.
The strong winds were caused by the remnants of hurricane Gonzalo, which caused devastation on the island of Bermuda last week.
