Carlsberg upgrades its brewery steeping section

Carlsberg UK has upgraded an in-process weigher used for precision batches of barley in the steeping section, part of the malting process, at its Northampton Brewery.

Premier Tech Chronos upgraded the APW Series weigher, which helps to ensure that the correct amount of barley is available at all times to prevent over and under steeping and ensures a good quality brewing process.

Since being installed, the throughput into the steeping section has been increased to 13t/h from 8t/h. By altering the weigher from a single to three loadcell system, the weighing accuracy has also been enhanced, while achieving higher throughputs.

Using a retrofit kit of parts, the weigher was changed on site to provide a three-point ATEX (explosion resistance) compliant loadcell weighing system. This ensures that weighing accuracy is not compromised whatever the product being monitored, batch weighed or totalised. Throughput capacities of up to 50t/h can be achieved, dependent on materials being weighed.
