Edinburgh-based biscuit manufacturer Nairns Oatcakes has raised its production capacity with a new fully automated line, which includes a second CW3 combination checkweigher and metal detection unit from Loma Systems. Both of its production lines are operating at speeds of up to 80 cartons a minute.

“Nairns Oatcakes is one of the largest manufacturers of oatcakes and oat biscuits in the world and continues to expand rapidly,” says Nairns Oatcakes’ technical director Gavin Love. “As a result, it is vital that we only use ‘best of breed’ packaging and processing equipment geared to improving production efficiencies and boosting capacity.”

Loma’s CW3 unit is said to offer low lifetime cost of ownership and significant cost savings. The checkweigher measures product weights quickly and precisely, with a specially developed diverter rejecting ‘out-of-tolerance’ items, while the metal detector consistently detects and rejects contaminated products.

With true variable frequency, the metal detector can automatically calibrate within seconds.

The system can weigh flexible and rigid packs of up to 6kg and comes in heights of 7001,200mm and widths of 1,9002,900mm. It can inspect up to 400 packs a minute.
