Lidl UK features in our roundup of recent food safety recalls, after the discount retailer recalled its Italiamo Cream of Potato & Spinach Soup, after discovering, due to a packaging error, some packs contained minestrone soup.

The minestrone soup – which contained egg and wheat, including gluten – was deemed to pose a potential health risk for those with an allergy or intolerance to egg and/or wheat.

The recall affected products with a pack size of 390ml and all ‘best before’ date codes.

Earlier this month Lidl recalled its Deluxe Elderflower presse due to the presence of undeclared sulphites. All batches of its Deluxe Elderflower presse in Northern Ireland were recalled, due to the presence of sulphites as an ingredient, which was not mentioned on the label.

Undeclared sulphites

The inclusion made the product a possible health risk to anyone with a sensitivity to sulphites and/or sulphur dioxide.

The recall affected all batches of the 750ml pack size.

Other recalls were issued last week by Windmill Organics Ltd and Quorn.

Windmill Organics recalled a batch of Taifun Tofu Basilico because some packs may contain small pieces of plastic. The products affected by the recall was sold in 200g packs, with a use by date of August 13 2015 and a batch code of 326.

No other Taifun products are known to be affected by the recall.

Recent recalls

  • Lidl's Italiamo Cream of Potato & Spinach Soup
  • Lidl's Deluxe Elderflower presse
  • Windmill Organics batches of Taifun Tofu Basilico
  • Quorn batches of its Chef's Selection Meat Free Beef Steaks

Quorn recalled two batches of its Chef's Selection Meat Free Beef Steaks because the wrong product had been packaged.

The packaging error meant the product contained gluten in the form of wheat and barley and milk, which was not mentioned on the label.

That made the product a potential health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat gluten, barley gluten and milk.

Chef’s Selection Meat Free Beef Steaks with a pack size of 180g were recalled. Batch codes of 705118 and 705081 and best before end dates of December 2016 and January 2017 were affected by the recall.

Meanwhile, avoiding costly product recalls will be one of the subjects covered at the Food Manufacture Group’s one-day Food safety conference.

Taking place at The Lowry, Manchester on September 29, the conference will examine the latest developments to ensure food safety from the farm, through manufacture and the supply chain, to products and packaging on sale. It will also discuss what more the industry can do to reassure consumers about the safety and authenticity of the food they eat.
