Up to 56 Walkers Crisps Leicester jobs face axe
“We continually review our operations to ensure we remain competitive,” Simon Devaney, site leader at the crisps plant in Bursom Road, said in a statement.
“Accordingly, we are planning to improve and upgrade the Walkers Bursom Road site. Unfortunately this may impact some employees and we will be entering a consultation period, which may result in the loss of some permanent roles.
‘Careful consideration’
“The decision to make these changes has been given very careful consideration, and we are committed to providing assistance to any individuals who may be impacted. We remain committed to Bursom Road and have a strong team working there.”
A spokesman for the company confirmed to FoodManufacture.co.uk that “up to 56” staff could go there as a result of the changes.
‘Shocked’
Councillor Sundip Meghani of Leicester City Council was reportedly “shocked” by the news.
Up to 87 workers were made redundant at Walkers Crisps’s Newark Road factory in Lincoln in March 2013, because PepsiCo announced plans to install new packing equipment at that site.
The Bursom Road plant sits close to Walkers Crisps’s Leycroft Road facility on the same campus. PepsiCo’s research & development centre for Europe, Beaumont Park, is also in Leicester.
