The inner-workings of Kellogg’s Manchester factory will be unveiled tomorrow (Tuesday July 26), as the company is the first to feature in BBC Two’s ‘Inside The Factory: How Our Favourite Foods Are Made’ second season.

The hour-long show, airing at 8pm, will show how Kellogg’s produces 34M kg of Corn Flakes annually; the equivalent of more than 6,100 elephants.

Largest cereal factory in Europe

More than 400 members of staff work at the Manchester factory, the largest cereal factory in Europe. Running for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the programme will show how grains of corn are transformed into Corn Flakes, and subsequently into Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut and Frosties.

Kellogg’s Manchester factory director Tony O’Brien said: “It was an incredible experience to welcome the BBC to our factory.

“You hear a lot about cereal sales going up and down, but the volume we make is pretty stable.

“The Kellogg’s factory has been here 75 years. I do think it’ll be here in another 75 if we continue doing what we do now: comparing ourselves to greenfield sites and benchmarking ourselves against best in class.”

‘Best in class’

The programme will show Masterchef’s Gregg Wallace and Cherry Healey visit the factory and talk to factory workers, as the corn moves across the production line.

“Gregg and Cherry genuinely wanted to be kept in the dark until the very last moment – they like their reactions to what is going on to be authentic.

“The production crew are always trying to get the perfect shot, and they managed to make Corn Flakes falling from a conveyor into a work of art.”

Next week, the BBC programme explores the journey of Walkers crisps, as 27 tonnes of potatoes are converted into crisps every 24 hours.

Meanwhile, don’t miss out on Food Manufacture’s interview with O’Brien, as we visit Kellogg’s Manchester factory for August’s ‘Me and my Factory’ feature.
