The Institute of Food Science & Technology (ISFT) has appointed Sterling Crew as its new vice president.

Crew takes up the position in addition to his roles as head of technical at crisp manufacturer Kolak Foods and chair of the IFST’s Food Safety Special Interest Group.

Before this, he has held roles at Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Coca-Cola and a number of own-label businesses.

His career highlights include working on the building of Kolak’s £9.6M snack site and writing Coca-Cola’s global good manufacturing practices standards and the Tesco due diligence rules, he told our sister magazine Food Manufacture last year.

‘Great honour’

“It is a great honour to be appointed,” he said. “Especially as the IFST is celebrating its 50th jubilee.”

Meanwhile, He told the IFST’s jubilee conference in May that criminals’ ignorance makes food fraud especially dangerous.

“With sudan 1, the biggest recall we’ve ever had in the UK, I understand why people did it, because it made the product look a lot better,” he said. “I don’t think those people ever thought hang on a minute this could be toxic, there was a lack of knowledge and a lack of behaviour saying ‘let’s try and find something that’s at least safe’.”
