Food Manufacture’s food safety conference will arm delegates with the latest information on earned recognition, according to Enmoore food safety consultant and former Food Standards Agency (FSA) boss John Barnes.

In this exclusive video interview, the conference’s keynote speaker Barnes said delegates would discover how regulated self-assurance – formerly known as earned recognition – could focus scarce resources in the areas of greatest potential benefits.

‘Exploit opportunities’

Speaking ahead of his keynote address at the Food Manufacture Group’s one-day food safety conference in June, Barnes explained: “I’m hoping that attending a conference like this will give [manufacturers] the opportunity to see what potential there is to exploit opportunities that either Brexit or earned recognition systems and changes to food control systems might give them.

“Also, even if they aren’t looking to exploit the opportunities, they must be aware of the changes that are going to come through to position themselves in the right way over the next few years.”

Earned recognition would allow food and drink manufacturers to use their finances more strategically, Barnes said.

What is earned recognition?

A more risk-based, self-regulatory approach to food hygiene inspections by the FSA and local authority environmental health departments. It is set to become more widely used for those manufacturers that can demonstrate compliance with the law and third-party hygiene audits.

This year’s Food safety conference

Barnes is one of 12 speakers at this year’s food safety conference. The conference will take place at Woodland Grange, Leamington Spa on Thursday June 22.

This year’s conference will be chaired by Campden BRI director general Professor Steven Walker. The sponsors of this year’s event include: Checkit, which manages food safety with smart cloud-based systems, Dycem, the contamination control flooring specialist, Pal International, hygienic product specialist and the Westgate Group, a specialist in factory dividers.

Meanwhile, in the first part of FoodManufacture.co.uk’s video interview with Barnes, he said the food safety conference would help businesses prepare for change over the next five years. You can still watch the first part of Barnes’ exclusive video interview with FoodManufacture.co.uk.

Food Manufacture Group’s 2017 food safety conference

Food hygiene consultant and former head of Local Authority enforcement at the Food Standards Agency John Barnes will be giving a keynote presentation at Food Manufacture Group’s 2017 food safety conference.

His presentation – ‘Towards 2020: where next for earned recognition’ – a will examine how new government recognition of manufacturers’ progress in lifting safety standards would allow the focus of scare resources on high risk areas of the food chain.
