According to Hardisty, the scrutiny followed an examination of 140 wooden pallets, in which 33% tested positive for foodborne pathogens. He said: "Cardboard containers present similar safety concerns in food packing environments, as they are more susceptible to mould than other types of packaging material.
"Food manufacturers should seriously consider using more hygienic alternatives, like plastic, to ensure they are not putting their staff and customers at risk. We've recently taken orders from Nestlé UK, Kellogg, Cadbury Kenya and Vion Food for our plastic containers and pallets."
