A micro-thickness vacuum layer inside a film is giving food and drink manufacturers the opportunity to insulate product more efficiently, and potentially to reduce the weight of existing packaging.
Nanoskin, developed by General Applications for Special Materials, comprises small vacuum-filled cells in a film, which can be applied to packaging during the production process. It could also be used in direct food contact applications.
Chief executive Mark Forrest says: "It will keep products colder for longer, and it should be possible to extend their shelf-life by maintaining desired temperatures for longer."
