Softpack machine trial results due

08-May-2007

Flow-wrap equipment specialist Ilapak is completing final machine tests on Rapid Action Packaging (RAP) Softpack paper-and-polylactide (PLA) laminate pack, while also looking for a licensing structure for the new technology.

Softpack is formed from the reel on a modified horizontal wrapping machine, and closed around the product using a combination of gussets and end seals. The concept was launched at Pro2Pac, alongside London's International Food Exhibition (IFE) in March. Initially it is being aimed at food-to-go products, such as baguettes and tortillas, but RAP chief executive Graham Williams says: "Its applications extend well beyond the food-on-the-go marketplace."

Ilapak's Tony McDonald says final tests for the automation project were due to be completed towards the end of April.

Commercial directors from Ilapak, RAP and Paragon Labels were expected to meet at Ilapak's Swiss site to hammer out an agreement on licensing.
