The latest innovation from press manufacturer Heidelberg applies drop-on-demand inkjet to digital short-run pack and label printing.
Heidelberg says it is working with Alcan Packaging Singen, Germany, on the next stage of its Linoprint project: to create opportunities for short-run, cost-effective digital print.
"So far, we have been focusing on aluminium foils," said head of consumables for Linoprint, Sven Michael. "But flexibles, laminates, carton, paper and other materials can be printed."
Neil Falconer, Pira International's head of strategic consultancy, printing, wondered whether the industry is ready for 'late stage customisation' that uses generic materials and digital print to slash leadtimes and costs.
Some see this as part of a wider move by Heidelberg to develop its presence in converting markets.
