An antibacterial Bag for Life – designed to prevent food infections from most common types of bacteria – won the Best New Idea award at the trade event Foodex 2016.

The Biomaster Bag for Life has an active bacterial agent built into the shopping bag during the manufacturing process so the protection lasts for the useful lifetime of the bag, according to its manufacturer Addmaster.

The firm’s sales director Sandrine Garnier received the award at the event last month.

Garnier said: “It is fantastic recognition for our product and really great timing, as a major UK retailer is due to launch this product from the beginning of May.

“It is our first big customer but other companies are lined up for it as well. It is so great to win – we didn’t expect it at all!”

Harmful bacteria

The anti-bacteria bag was made after a report by food safety researchers in the US found that just over half of reusable shopping bags contained harmful bacteria.

Addmaster claimed that independent tests on the bag proved it inhibited the growth of most common types of bacteria by more than 99%.

The business also supplied premium quality additives for the plastics, paper, textile, paints and coatings industries.

The Great New Idea competition invited Foodex exhibitors to put forward their best innovations of the past six months. It saw more than 70 entries and the winner was announced at a presentation at the National Exhibition Centre, (NEC), during the show.

Great New Idea

A shortlist of three finalists was chosen – voted for by visitors to the show, as well as other members of the industry – ahead of the event.

The runners up were a food assembly line manufacturer and the maker of a water testing app.

MCA was acknowledged for its automatic hamburger assembly line.

ITS Europe received recognition for its eXact Idip app.

Foodex showcased the latest trends across the food manufacturing sectors, from traceability to new ingredients spanning the bakery, beverage, dairy, fresh, ingredients, logistics, meat and seafood sectors.

Foodex 2016 was co-located with the Farm Shop & Deli Show, National Convenience Show and Food & Drink Expo. The Great New Idea competition ran across all four shows.

Winners at the other shows were at the Farm Shop & Deli event: Boozy Udders Cocktail Ice Cream; at the National Convenience Show: Pelican Rouge Coffee Roasters; and at Food & Drink Expo: Nim’s Fruit Crisps.

All three events took place at the NEC, Birmingham between April 18–20.

Meanwhile, read what keeps food and drink manufacturers awake at night in this exclusive video interview with TV business broadcaster Steph McGovern.
