Secretary general of the European glass packaging federation, FEVE, Adeline Farrelly said: "If we start making 'waste' a raw material, we improve its image. But the EU's objectives also include wanting to make it easier to work with cullet and transport it without requiring special certification for waste."
In the UK, the amount of used glass packaging going to landfill is relatively low, but so too is the proportion used in container-to-container recycling, with aggregate for roadbuilding absorbing much of the excess. The European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Seville, Spain, is compiling a dossier on the topic, which will be circulated to stakeholders as a basis for a potential change in the status of waste glass.
