Beanz keepz
in the fridge

06-Sep-2010

Heinz appears eager to play down expectations, but the arrival of the Heinz Beans kilo-containing plastics Fridge Pack has fuelled speculation around metal’s future share of the ambient foods category – and around possible imitations.

The resealable container has a 15-month shelf-life and, once open, will keep the beans fresh for up to five days in the fridge.

Marketing manager John Alderman said: "We envisage that the can will remain the dominant pack format." But two years after launch, the brand's microwaveable plastic Snap Pots were notching up a third the retail value of the flagship 415g can.

The blowmoulded barrier polypropylene jars hold 1kg of beans, or the equivalent of nearly two and a half standard cans. They are produced by RPC Corby, with gravure-printed oriented polystyrene (OPS) shrink sleeves from CCL Decorative Sleeves. Use of OPS minimises vertical shrink, says the company. RPC already supplies thermoformed Snap Pots from its Bebo Plastik plant.
