Let them eat vegetable cakes

01-May-2011

Star of Channel 4’s Cook Yourself Thin, Harry Eastwood, has teamed up with the American entrepreneur Ashley Maddox to launch Petit Pois: a range of cakes that have been baked using vegetables to replace the butter and some of the sugar.

Petit Pois cupcakes use free-range eggs, 70% cocoa chocolate, real vanilla bean and unwaxed citrus fruit in four flavours: Vanilla, Chocolate, Lemon and Orange.

Each cake is topped with a green marzipan 'pea' to indicate the healthy aspect of the product hence the name.

The makers say there is more grated pumpkin, courgette or beetroot in Petit Pois cakes than any other single ingredient. The high vegetable content extends the shelf-life because the vegetables continue to moisturise and sweeten the cakes days after they have been made unlike butter, which stiffens with time.

The range is also gluten-free, lactose-free, and contains fewer than half the calories of standard cupcakes.
