Children's Food Campaign calls for tighter controls on food for kids

By Rod Addy, 24-Dec-2010

A food campaign group has renewed its calls for tighter controls on the marketing of foods high in saturated fats, sugars and salt to children.

The Children's Food Campaign (CFC) was responding to the publication of data from the National Child Measurement Programme, which showed that the number of children who are overweight or obese by the time they reach Year 6 (age 10/11) had reached 33.4% for the school year 2009/10, up from the previous year's 32.6%.

CFC's coordinator Christine Haigh said: "The coalition government should take urgent action to tackle the childhood obesity crisis, including the introduction of legislation to protect children from junk food marketing."
