Partnering with environmental assessment body NQA, the UK's largest supplier of eggs and egg products has been improving its environmental management systems for the past four years.
The key drivers were: educating and inspiring employees on pollution prevention and reducing energy usage and waste; and showing customers its commitment to the environment.
Team meetings now include environmental updates and the firm has introduced divisional green champions. The green champions are supported by an environmental department, which guides low carbon initiatives across the company.
These include measuring energy consumption, introducing renewable energy sources such as wind turbines, solar panels and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) conversions for lorries and reductions in waste to landfill.
Noble Foods has seen more engaged employees and improved communication on environmental issues. LPG trials have resulted in an 11% cost saving on diesel consumption. Outside the company, there has been less enforcement from regulators and noticeable interest from customers.
