The soft drinks sector adds £11bn to the UK economy and supports more than 340,000 jobs nationwide, according to figures released this week.

Find out how the industry has benefitted each region of the country by clicking on the interactive map, based on research by Oxford Economics, below.

The red pins indicate money added to the economy from soft drinks. The yellow pins highlight where jobs have been supported.

The British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA), which commissioned the research, launched its findings at the Houses of Parliament on Monday (October 26).

Impact of soft drinks sector

  • Over 15,000 direct jobs in manufacturing
  • Nearly 350,000 jobs sustained by manufacturing, supply chain and retail

‘Major economic contribution’

BSDA director general Gavin Partington said the report showed that the soft drinks sector supported at least 100 jobs in every parliamentary constituency.

“Taken together it shows that our sector contributes over £11bn to the UK economy and supports over 340,000 jobs,” Partington said.

“By any standards that is a major economic contribution to this country.”

Speaking at the launch, Brecon and Radnorshire MP Chris Davies said the findings were “not surprising” in light of the sector’s contribution to the economy.

‘Vital part’ of economy

“Businesses in this sector, including Radnor Hills in my constituency, sustain thousands of jobs and are a vital part of the UK economy,” Davies said.

“The successes achieved so far by the industry in increasing the consumption of low and no calorie products is admirable and demonstrates its responsible nature.”

Contribution to economy

  • Nearly £1.7bn directly added by manufacture of soft drinks
  • Over £11bn added in total by manufacturing, supply chain and retail
