The RSPCA was responding to a European Food Safety Authority report that pointed to genetic deficiencies of broiler chickens that have been selected for their fast growth cycle. It also called for higher standards in stocking densities, environment, lighting and litter.
BPC chief executive Peter Bradnock said the RSPCA was overstating its case. "We must look beyond the headlines to the recommendations most of which the industry would agree with and some are already being implemented," said Bradnock. "The report recognises that genetic selection has changed considerably in recent years to encompass welfare traits with significant success."
An EU directive on broiler chickens came into effect in June, but Bradnock said it was too early to gauge its impact.
