Horsemeat scandal – in pictures
It began in January when the Irish food safety watchdog, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, revealed tests on frozen beef burgers stocked in the country had detected the presence of horsemeat.
The results showed that of 27 burgers tested, 10 contained horse DNA and three contained pig DNA.
Since then, the scandal has taken many twists and turns enveloping a range of major retailers – from Tesco to Asda – and food manufacturers, meat processors, food service companies and others.
While apparently posing no direct challenge to food safety, the crisis has shaken confidence in the food industry and prompted calls for greater clarity in supply chains.
To help learn the lessons of the horsemeat crisis, the Food Manufacture Group is staging a free one-hour webinar starting at 11am GMT on Thursday, May 16. Book your free place here.
