Premier Foods, fraud and recalls lead week’s headlines

Premier Foods creating 80 jobs with the opening of its new £20M production line, Freeza Meats’s conviction on food fraud offences and food safety recalls dominated last week’s headlines.

Premier’s new Mr Kipling production line at its Barnsley site began manufacturing its snack pack range of cake slices last week.

The firm’s boss Gavin Darby said the new line would help Premier capture growth opportunities.

There was also good news for South Caernarfon Creameries, which was awarded a £1M grant from Finance Wales to help boost cheese production at its site in Gwynedd.

Splash the cash

There was bad news for Freeza Meats Ltd, which was told to pay £114,000 after pleading guilty to 12 food fraud offences.

It was also a bad week for recalls, as a number of businesses were forced to withdraw products over safety fears.

United Biscuits

United Biscuits had to recall its McVitie’s Toasting Waffles after its new recipe included undeclared milk and lupin.

Sainsbury had to recall its British lamb shish kebab over fears that it contained beef; Brindisa Spanish Foods recalled its LaCinata smoked paprika because it contained salmonella and Nisha’s Toffee Bonbons had to be withdrawn because of undeclared milk.
