Buyouts, alcohol and jobs lead this week’s selection of the top headlines from the UK food and drink manufacturing sector.

Watch the latest edition of Good week, bad week to get the full lowdown on which food businesses have had a positive start to the year and which have had a start to forget.

The alcoholic drinks industry had negative news to start to the year when medical officers lowered the recommended amount of units of alcohol for men from 21 to 14 per week.

They also claimed any level of alcohol consumption could increase the risk of cancer.

It was also a bad week for food and drink manufacturing jobs as 430 roles were put at risk at Tulip and 130 employees lost their jobs at Burnley-based abattoir B Riley & Sons.

Good news for Asda

Enjoying a better week was retailer Asda and Glendale Foods.

Asda bought meat manufacturing firms Kober and Forza AW outright, having previously owned a stake in the businesses.

Glendale Foods’s md Paul Burkitt and operations director Mark Jones completed a management buyout of the Salford-based business, taking control from the Mortimer family, which founded the firm in 1982.
