'Constructively communicate to avoid escalating costs'

By Tom Chandler, 01-Jan-2012

Refurbishment projects that take place while food production continues could avoid delays and escalating costs through better communication, according to Todd Hallam, health and safety manager for Chalcroft Construction.

Hallam stresses that everyone involved in a project needs to be aware of what will be involved.

"The main environmental, health and safety aspects to take into consideration prior to any works taking place is how the design of the proposed works will impact the existing environment and how it will actually be constructed on a practical basis," says Hallam.

Chalcroft Construction has refurbished the sites of blue chip firms, such as Coca-Cola Enterprises, Premier Foods and Nestlé, which "understand and appreciate the provisions that need to be allocated to ensure the safe control of works while maintaining their production".

But, while most clients understand the impact the construction will have, some do not recognise the importance that good communication plays, he adds. "It is essential to build relationships and communicate prior to any works commencing."

One area that is often overlooked is the impact movement of plant and refurbishment materials will have on live operations. It is critical that all activities are carefully co-ordinated, he says. For example, to minimise disruption to services such as power, water and air.
