Tesco has withdrawn 66,000 packs of garlic bread produced by Bakkavor after a number of packets were found to be underweight.

Chilled food manufacturer Bakkavor has apologised for the product weight error, which sparked the recall, and said that measures have been taken to prevent a reoccurrence.

Garlic bread batches, worth £93,000, were removed from the shelves after Trading Standards made the discovery during two visits to Tesco stores in Aberdeenshire.

Officers found that 39 packs of Tesco’s own-brand garlic bread slices weighed less than the figure declared on the packaging. One pack weighed 229.8g, 20% less than its stated weight of 290g.

A spokeswoman for the chilled food manufacturer confirmed that the bakery product had been recalled due to “an error with product weight”.

“Bakkavor takes such incidents seriously and sincerely apologises for this error. We have put in place a number of measures to prevent a similar incident arising in the future,” she said.

“We wish to reassure customers and consumers of our continued commitment to compliance and the highest standards of production.”

Aberdeenshire Council’s Trading Standards manager Wilma Urquhart said they were pleased to see that the Tesco acted swiftly following the discovery.

‘Batches worth £93,000’

“By issuing an emergency product withdrawal, batches worth £93,000 have been removed from the shelves,” Urquhart said.

“Our work is very important in protecting both consumers and businesses from unfair competition and the service will continue to work with both Tesco and Bakkavor to ensure legislative compliance.”

A Tesco spokeswoman said: “We take great care to deliver clear information for our customers so they can make informed decisions on the products they buy and to ensure that customers receive the stated quantity of product.

"We are disappointed that errors occurred with a very small number of product and we have worked with our supplier to ensure there is no repeat of the issue.”
