Organic caramel launched in US

01-Feb-2006

The trend for organic products seems to be seeping through to the colours sector as worldwide caramel colour manufacturer D D Williamson launches its first certified organic caramel colour.

The new organic products - sucrose-based caramel colour and caramelised rice syrup - are the first to come out of North America, claims Williamson, and were produced in response to customer demand for organic ingredients in food and drink processing.

Caramel colour, which is manufactured from the controlled heat treatment of carbohydrates, is the world's most widely consumed food colour (by weight), says the company.

"Food and beverage processors are requesting organic ingredients to meet the growing consumer demand for organic products," says Williamson's vice president Owen Parker. "We were able to develop one organic colour with stability in low pH to enhance visual appeal in many types of beverages."

D D Williamson is the world's largest and oldest manufacturer of caramel colour. It produces caramel colour for leading global companies in beverages, flavours, sauces, gravies, soups and baked goods. The company operates eight manufacturing sites in the US, UK, Ireland, China, Swaziland and Brazil.
