Food that tastes good enough to eat

DHA omega-3 specialist Martek claims it is ahead of the game when it comes to masking the taste of algae-derived omega-3. "It has gained increasing popularity among manufacturers and consumers, as it has a clean and consistent taste so it does not compromise the quality of the final product," claims the company.

Martek's vegetarian DHA omega-3, Life'sDHA, is sustainable and has an eco-friendly profile as it is made from algae grown under controlled conditions and is free from oceanic pollutants, says the firm.

The ingredient can be used in a wide variety of applications, including dairy products, dressings, margarine and spreads, baby food and dietary supplements. "It is easy-to-use, as it blends well with most foods, and has good shelf stability," the firm claims.

Products containing the ingredient, such as Danonino, Danone's recently developed drinkable yoghurt, are due to be showcased at the Vitafoods exhibition in Geneva from May 8-10.

Benefits from DHA omega-3 include improved brain, eye and cardiovascular health.
