Fat-busting liquorice extract gets regulatory status

01-Jan-2012

The European Commission has granted Kaneka's liquorice extract novel food status.

Glavonoid can now be used in food supplements and beverages based on milk, yogurt, fruit or vegetables. Its ability to activate the body's fat metabolism and suppress fat synthesis offers dual support in fighting visceral fat.

Its new status paves the way for firms to create products targeting the weight management and body shaping market. Possible claims for such products would mostly be aimed at slimming, a healthy body mass index, boosting fat metabolism and supporting weight management.

In DNA micro array analysis, Glavonoid exhibited a two-way efficiency mechanism. On the one hand, it increases the body's fat-burning ability by up-regulating the genes involved in fatty acid oxidation and, on the other, it decreases fat synthesis by down-regulating genes involved in fatty acid synthesis.

Kaneka Pharma Europe states: "With visceral fat a main risk factor for the development of a metabolic syndrome, we see an extremely promising market here."
