Ingredients specialist S Black is distributing natural brown colourings derived from malt and malt extracts supplied by Muntons, based in Stowmarket, Suffolk, under the brands Clarimalts and Torrax for food and beverage applications.
Pigments sourced in this way could be labelled as malt extracts, enabling retailers to achieve their targets for cleaner label declarations, said Hertford-based S Black.
The company said Clarimalts could offer a natural alternative to Caramel (EU-listed additive E150c), providing a choice of liquid or spray-dried options in easy-to-use formats.
The suite of colours could be used in any industry sector where natural colour is needed, including bakery, confectionery, sauces, soups and hot and cold beverages, according to the company.
The addition of just 1% malt extract provides an appetising barbecue sauce with satisfying mouthfeel, without resorting to E150c, says S Black.
